The WMGA has a full range of tournaments. The WMGA Metropolitan Men’s Amateur is one of the oldest in the country dating from 1914. The Bob Riley Junior Open, originally the DC Junior, is the third oldest junior championship in the country, only surpassed for longevity by the Metropolitan (NY) Junior (1912) and the Western Junior (1914). The Frank Emmet Schoolboy, begun in 1934, is one of the oldest high school championships sponsored by a golf association.
The WMGA conducts local qualifying for the U.S. Open and Sectional Qualifying for the U.S. Amateur and U.S. Mid-Amateur.
Education and Assistance
The WMGA conducts annual training sessions for its Rules officials so as to enhance the quality of WMGA competitions. It also provides rules education to college and high school golf teams and in 2019 will be assisting the First Tee of Washington, DC with rules education for its players. It will also provide, on request, rules seminars for its member clubs.
The association’s rules volunteers also assist high school competitions in Maryland and Virginia, including the Maryland State Public High School Championship. They also assist college competitions up and down the east coast. Our volunteers have assisted at all the USGA Championships, the PGA Championship, PGA Tour events, and The Masters.
The WMGA administers the WMGA/Frank Emmet scholarship program which awards scholarships to college-bound golfers that have outstanding academic and citizenship records. A number of scholarships are given annually and are renewable one time as long as the recipient maintains a good scholastic record. Applications are due July 15th each year.
