Hagen Tames the Beast

Kent Hagen of Upper Marlboro scorched the Northwest GC today in US Open Local Qualifying with a 66 (-6).  Northwest GC – The Beast – exacted punishment on most of the field today.  Cool temps and gusty winds throughout the day made club selection difficult, when distance control over the 7,340 yard monster was paramount.  Only one other player broke par, Steve Delmar of Gaithersburg, assistant golf coach at the University of Maryland, brought in a 71 at the end of the day. Justin Feldman, who plays on the Maryland golf team, and Mickey Demorat of Merritt Island, Florida, brought in rounds of par to advance to sectional qualifying.

Jordan Meltzer had the longest wait of the day.  Starting in the first group off of number ten at 7:30, he was in a bit after 11:30 with his 73 and had to wait close to six hours for the outcome to be decided.  He then took matters into his own hands by birdieing the first play-off hole to grab the fifth of five qualifying spots advancing to sectional qualifying.  David Kocher, Sam Jung, and Nicholas Mejia all made bogey on the first play-off hole leaving Evan Santa and Jay Woodson, having made pars, to continue the play-off for 1st and 2nd alternate.  Woodson left his second shot on the par 4 ninth about 12 feet left of the hole, which was tucked in the back of the green behind the right bunker.  Santa attacked the hole but was bit long, nestling into the rough, presenting a very difficult downhill shot.  He played a terrific third to about 2 feet.  It was for naught though, as Woodson rolled in his birdie putt to claim the first alternate slot.

The golf course, one of the premier public golf courses in the region, was is outstanding shape.  It is a big golf course with multiple tees to accommodate every level of player.  The qualifiers played every bit of the golf course.  With the greens running about 11 1/2 on the Stimp meter, players needed to stay below the hole.  Greens in regulation was a requirement.  If you have not played Northwest GC, make the trip.

Montgomery County Golf and the staff at Northwest GC provided great support and hospitality to the Washington Metropolitan GA and the USGA for the qualifier.  The Associations cannot thank them enough.
