Santa Wins Worsham

WMGA Past President Ken Bedford and Champion Evan Santa

Evan Santa, from Edgewater and Crofton Country Cub, broke away from a three-way tie on the second day to pull out a two-stroke victory in the 72nd Bubby Worsham Memorial tournament at Bethesda CC, August 14. The course was played at 6,791 yards to a par of 35-35–70 for all but the 14-15 and 13 under age groups.

Santa, Morgan Egloff, from Chevy Chase, and Mike Barillo, IV, from Germantown, had opened with 2-under-par 68’s, and by the end of 27 holes, Santa and Egloff were still tied and Barillo had fallen three strokes behind. Egloff birdied 10, both bogeyed 12, and Santa drew even when he rolled in an eight-foot birdie putt on the 14th green. While Santa parred the last four holes, Egloff, the Maryland State Amateur champion, slipped back with bogeys at 15 and 18.

“I thought the pin placements were tougher today [than Monday] and the wind was more of a factor,” said Santa, 21, a University of Maryland junior. “So the key was chipping and putting. I’ve been putting well lately, and with my chipping I gave myself some reasonable chances.”

Santa ended with 68-70–138; Egloff, the current Maryland State Amateur champion, placed second with 68-72–140, while Barillo finished seventh with 68-77–145. In between , Jeff Wilson, from Austin, Texas, had 70-71–141; Pudge Williams, Washington D.C., 75-68–143, with the 68 the low round of the day; Evan Katz, Washington, D.C., a Bethesda CC member, 69-74–143, and Rij Patel, Hayfields CC, 71-73–144.

In a companion program, the Dewey Ricketts Memorial, Dugan McCabe, from Bethesda and Bethesda CC, won the 16-18 division with 75-73–148, backed by Addison Wells, Severna Park, 75-77–152, and Ethan Shapiro, Arlington, Va., 78-76–154.

Ryan Feldman, from Rockville, took the Ricketts 14-15 title helped by the division’s low round, 70, after opening with 77. The 70 was the low round of the year for the Wootten High School sophomore, 15, who had three birdies, three bogeys. Jack Pogorelc, 14, Bethesda, and Bethesda CC, last year’s playoff winner in 13-under, had 74-75–149, and Zachary Maloy, Potomac, 73-79–152, and Akash Marakath, Ellicott City, 74-78–152.  The 14-15 Ricketts group played the golf course at 6,429 yards.

Alexander Maloy, 13, from Potomac, won the 13-under crown with 79-78–157. Peter Barros, Bethesda, winner of 13-under titles at the Bob Riley Junior and the Bobby Gorin Memorial, placed second, 79-80–159, and Luke Lombardo, Severna Park, had 81-79–160. Congressional CC members Maloy and Barros had placed 2-3 in the Maryland State Juniors in June.  The 13 and under Ricketts group played the golf course at 6,005 yards.

13 and Under – Luke Lombardo (3rd), Alexander Maloy (1st), Peter Barros (2nd)
