Rij Patel, from Hunt Valley, went wire-to-wire to win the championship of the 9th annual Young Amateurs tournament at Bethesda Country Club, August 13. He finished 69-70–139, good for a four-stroke margin on his closest pursuers in the 33-man field.
The event was part of a four-tournament program which will conclude August 14 with the reconstituted Worsham Memorial
.Patel, 21, who had the only round in the 60’s, stayed in control with a round that included two birdies, two bogeys on each nine for 35-35, par for a course played at 6,724 yards.
Jon Moles and Mike McCarthy tied for second at 143, followed by Matt Feinstein, 145. Will Koras and Jeff Wilson completed the top five with 146’s.
Moles, the 2016 Worsham champion from Frederick, had a birdie on each nine and three bogeys on the back for 72-71; Mike McCarthy, a Bethesda CC member, had a birdie on the front and four bogeys on the other side for 70-73; Matthew Feinstein, from McLean, Va., had 73-72, while Jeff Wilson, from Austin, Texas, and Will Koras, Lutherville, tied for fifth with 74-72 and 76-70, respectively.
With a cut to the low 30 and ties for the Ricketts’ 16-18 division and the Young Ams, a field of 31 players at 157 will play the final round, August 14, to conclude the 54-hole Worsham championship.
