The 2021 Washington Metropolitan GA schedule is now available ⇒ HERE
The WMGA Senior Team Matches kick-off the new season each year. After their cancellation last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we are hopeful to get them going in 2021. Preliminary matches are played on Sunday, April 11, Saturday, April 17, and Sunday, April 18. Saturday, April 24 is the scheduled make-up day with final eight, single elimination matches played on Sunday, April 25, Saturday, May 1, and the final match on Sunday, May 2. (The Belle Haven Four-Ball is scheduled for May 7-9.)
The first tournament of the year is the Mid-Amateur, a one day, 36 hole event. It will be contested at the Worthington Manor GC in Urbana, Md. If you are planning on playing in the US Amateur qualifier at Worthington Manor, this will be a super warm-up, as it will be set up very similar to the US Am Qualifier.
The Metropolitan Amateur is at the Montgomery CC, August 5-8. In 2020 the event was changed to a two day stroke play event due to Covid-19 restrictions and protocols and a weather postponement which pushed it into late October. We are hopeful that we will be able to return to the normal format of a one-day stroke play qualifier followed by five rounds of match play. Montgomery CC has hosted a number of WMGA and MAGA events over the last few seasons and is always in outstanding condition.
The WMGA Metropolitan Senior Amateur will be hosted by the Hobbit’s Glen GC August 30-31. The Senior Amateur actually features three age divisions Pre-Sniors 45-54, Seniors 55-64, and Super Seniors 65 and Over. A Legends Division may be added, if there is enough support from the players. Hobbit’s is home to numerous outstanding players and we can expect them to contend in all the age divisions.
The Four-Ball Championship, featuring Amateur, Senior, and Super Senior Divisions, will be played at the Washington G & CC on October 18. Washington G & CC reopened in 2020 after a major renovation by Tom Doak. Considered the oldest golf course in Virginia and the 9th to join the USGA, WGCC has been an important part of the golf scene in DC/NOVA for a long time. The WMGA is very pleased to to conduct an event at WGCC so soon after its reopening.
WMGA Junior events are as follows. The Frank Emmet Schoolboy is at the Worthington Manor GC June 23-25. The Bob Riley Junior Open will be played at Belle Haven CC July 202-21. The Bobby Gorin Memorial will be back at Woodmont CC on July 26-27. As in 2020 it will be two rounds of stroke play as the club continues to maintain a very safe posture and evaluate the impact of Covid-19 on the club and it operations going forward. The Bubby Worsham Memorial is at the Bethesda CC, August 2-3. The Worsham features three age divisions: 14-15, 16-18, and 19-24. All play from the same set of tees and the over-all low score, from any division, is the Worsham Champion.
USGA Qualifiers conducted by the WMGA are as follows:
US Open Local Qualifier – Tuesday, May 4 at Northwest GC
US Amateur Qualifier – Tuesday-Wednesday, July 6-7 at Worthington Manor GC
US Mid-Amateur Qualifier – Monday, August 16 at Norbeck CC
