Dugan McCabe Captures Worsham Crown
Dugan McCabe, a rising senior at Colgate University, held off friend and fellow Bethesda CC member Kevin Johnson as well as Jack Pogorelc, a rising Sophomore at Boston College and Aaron Williams, Grand Canyon University, to claim the 73rd Bubby Worsham Memorial, which was contested over the challenging Bethesda CC golf course. McCabe was rock steady through two rounds, carding 66-68–134 (-6) to claim the crown. His 3 under 32 on the outward nine Tuesday took him to -9. His lead was never threatened, as Johnson, who was tied with McCabe after 18, went out in three over 38 and could not recover any momentum, finishing at 139 (-1). Williams bogeyed his final hole to drop out of a tie for second. No one played the back nine better than Williams, who carded a 33 each day on the inward nine. Pogorelc, who’s early junior years were spent on the Bethesda course, toured his final nine in 1 under, gaining solo second.
The Worsham Memorial has been held at the Bethesda CC, where Bubby Worsham was a member as a junior golfer, since 2018. It has grown into a must play for the local college golf crowd as a warm-up for their fall golf season and end to their summer season at home. Local high school golfers play as well, gaining the opportunity to compete against a strong field of college players and recent college graduates..
Marvin “Bubby” Worsham won the District Junior Open in 1947 and subsequently went to Wake Forest University as a member of their golf team. He was the roommate and teammate of Arnold Palmer. In 1949, Bubby was killed in an auto accident on October 22, 1950, a week shy of his 21st birthday, on the way back to Wake Forest from a dance in neighboring Durham, NC . Arnold Palmer with the help of Frank Emmet Emmet changed the name of the District Junior Open to the Bubby Worsham Memorial in 1951.
Beginning in 2018 the event has been comprised of three age divisions: the Dewey Ricketts 14-15, Dewey Ricketts 16-18, and Young Amateurs 19-24. The change was made to introduce younger players to more history of the Game and to accommodate more players of college age, reflective of both the age Bubby Worsham and Arnold Palmer when they competed in college. The player with the lowest score is the Bubby Worsham Memorial Champion.
The Young Amateur Division title went to Jack Pogorelc (68-70–138), the Dewey Ricketts 16-18 Division title went to Alex Maloy (74-71–145), and the Dewey Ricketts Age Division title went to Sean Nguyen (74-76–150).
Young Amateur (19-24) and Dewey Ricketts 16-18 Age divisions played the course at 6,745 yards, Par 70. The overall low score of these two divisions is the overall Worsham Champion.
The Dewey Ricketts 14-15 Age Division played the course at 6,450 yards, Par 70.
