Charlie Winegardner defends his WMGA Mid Amateur Championship
Charlie Winegardner, from The Cannon Club, defended Washington Metropolitan Golf Association Mid-Amateur Championship at Blue Mash Golf Club. Winegardner had scores of 68-70 to win by one shot over Tracy Vallandingham (68-71) of Breton Bay Golf & Country Club and Ryan McCarthy (70-69) of Argyle Country Club. This is Winegardner 3rd win in this event in 5 years and his 4th overall (2018, 2020, 2023, 2024). Vallandingham had the lead with 9 holes to play but a closing 38 on the front nine and closing bogey on his 36th hole left him one shot out of a playoff. Ryan McCarthy, who won the Middle Atlantic Mid-Senior Four-Ball (with Stu Strang) earlier this month at Baltimore County Club, had a bad break in the morning round losing a ball in the left rough on the narrow 7th hole leading to a double bogey 6. The best round in the afternoon was posted by Zachary Verses of Trump National, DC with a 3 under 68 and a tie for 4th place with the 2023 runner-up Zach Miller from Baltimore Country Club. 78 players took on the 6700 yard Arthur Hills design course in Laytonsville, Maryland on clear and warm day.
