Bubby Worsham Rnd 1 Results/Round 2 Start Times

A crowded leader-board highlighted play on the first day of the 70th Bubby Worsham Memorial tournament at Glenn Dale Golf Club. From a field of 44 starters, six players returned scores of under-par-70, three at 68 and three at 69. The 6,184-yard course played to a par of 35-35.

Of the three 68’s, Angus Ricks, of Arlington, Va., and Henry Angier, of Grasonville, Md., each birdied the 462-yard 18th hole, while Charles Young, of Woodstock, Md., birdied 16 and parred 17-18, creating the tie at the top.

Ricks, 16, a St. Alban’s School sophomore, closed with a 20-foot putt for the last of his six birdies; Angier, 20, a rising sophomore at Methodist University, had a bogey-free round with birdies at Nos. 11 and 18, while Young, 19, who will be a University of Maryland sophomore in the fall, had two front-nine birdies and a bogey ahead of his back-nine birdie.

For Ricks, it was his best round of the year, while Angier claimed two earlier Public Links titles. Young finished second to Jon Moles last year, including a second-round 66 in his 211, three behind the winner.

At 69 were Ryan Schechter, 18, from Potomac, a Towson University sophomore, had two birdies on short putts and one bogey, then finished with 10 straight pars; Brandon Wilson, 16, a St. Paul’s junior from Perry Hall, who included a birdie at 18 (a chip and an eight-foot putt) in his tour, and Matthew Malits, 17, a DeMatha High School junior from Silver Spring, who also birdied 18.

Wilson came in backed by three wins and player-of-the-year honors on the Middle Atlantic PGA Tour, while Malits shot a 36-hole total of 133 to miss a playoff by a stroke in U.S. Amateur qualifying at his home course, and earlier had gone to the second round of the Maryland State Amateur.

Jackson, Mote, from Alexandria, Va., third last year, was alone at 70.

The full field will play the second round, August 15, followed by a cut of half the field who will play the final round, August 16.

The event is sponsored and conducted by the Washington Metropolitan Golf Association.
