Jacob Ferrari, Urbana HS, roared off the line in first round play Monday, birdieing the first four holes at the Worthington Manor GC. He finished the day at 68 (-4) and a two shot lead over Garnet Manley 70 (-2), Jefferson Forest High School (Lynchburg, VA). Dylan Allen, DeMatha Catholic HS was another three back at 73 (+1). Next at 74 (+2) is Peter Barros, Georgetown Prep. Ferrari’s blistering pace and temperatures in the mid-nineties left the rest of the field gasping for air and strung out well behind.
A bogey on 6 followed by a birdie on 7, along with three pars put Ferrari in great position with a 32 on the front. On the back he birdied 11 and bogeyed 17 with pars everywhere else to end up at 32-36–68, gaining the pole position for the final round.
Manley, with birdies on 1, 9, and 18, had just one bogey, 8, to open with 70. Allen, who came to the United States from France in the spring of 2019 posted a 73. His round included birdies on 1, 4, 9, and the very difficult par 4 12th. Bogeys on 10, 11, and 18, arguably the easiest holes on the back nine, left him frustrated at the end of the round Allen was a steady performer in WMGA events in 2019, always challenging the top of the leader board. He is expected to do the same in 2020. Barros, at 74, is a rising sophomore at Georgetown Prep, had 16 pars and 2 bogeys. One has to wonder what he may do in round two with a hot putter.

Second round play gets underway at 730 Tuesday.
The WMGA Sponsor-Staff event was held at the conclusion of play. PJ Boatwright intern Matt Barnes (Argyle CC and Georgetown University) led the way with a 70 (-2). Representing the Emmet Family were Emmet and Robert Scanlon. Emmet struggled early, finishing with a 90. Robert kept it together in the torrid weather and posted 79. The WMGA staff rep failed to post after running out of golf balls on the 12th hole – just kidding – fake news!
