Argyle CC Wins 2022 A-Team Matches
For the second time in three years the Argyle CC won the WMGA A-Team Matches. In 2020 they defeated a very competitive team from The Cannon Club. In 2021 Argyle lost to the USNA GC in the semi-finals by one point. Navy went on to lose to The Cannon Club in the final. This year’s edition saw Argyle go undefeated in the play-in matches and then advance their way to the top beating The Piedmont Club, The Cannon Club, and finally Lakewood CC in the final by a score of 14 – 4, a margin that was actually closer than the numbers suggest.
This year every bracket of the play-in matches was undecided until the third round, to our knowledge something that had not happened before. With many of the matches going down to the wire there were also sudden death play-offs. Lakewood, a team that has gotten better each year for the last four or five seasons, survived a play-off in the semis with Belle Haven CC to set up their match with Argyle. Belle Haven is another team that has become more competitive recently. With some of the older players on teams stepping aside to allow their younger players (typically the college set) to play, the matches have become far more competitive across the board. It is a welcome change as more clubs are gaining the opportunity to advance to the ‘Final 8’ and attempt to claim the prize.
Argyle CC has set the trend and with a growing crop of excellent players should be a favorite for years to come.
