Manor CC Wins 2023 Senior Team Matches

Manor CC thwarted the Congressional CC team’s bid to win their third straight WMGA Senior Team match today by a final score of 7 – 5.  Congressional has won the event six times (1980, 2007, 2008, 2012, 2021, and 2022).  When Manor last won (their only win) most of their current team members were junior golfers.  That was back in 1971 when they beat neighboring Argyle CC.

The matches were lopsided at both sites.

Congressional CC won at home 4 1/2 – 1 1/2.  Mark Garraputo and Chad Haines of the home team split 1 1/2 – 1 1/2 with Bill Leonard and Ken DeStefano of Manor CC.  George Mavrikes and Mike McGowan anchored the home team at Congressional and took their match 3 – 0 over the Manor duo of Mike Garner and Stu Strang.

At Manor, the lead home team of Tucker Sampson and John Vollmer knocked off the very strong Congressional team of Clay Fitzgerald and Skip Tendall 2 1/2 – 1/2.  The last match to finish saw veteran Manor player Jim Castagna (who was already an established amateur and was set to play in his first A-Team Matches for Manor – this was his 19th Senior Team Match) and his partner Gary Taylor take down a couple of veteran Congressional players, Ben Brundred III and Gary Hann by the score of 3 – 0.

The weather, which initially was forecast to be on the ugly side, was not as bad as predicted and the matches were played under cloudy skies with an occasional light shower or drizzle.

The final score was Manor CC 7 and Congressional CC 5.  Congratulations to both teams on some very fine play throughout the matches.
