The 2018 Bobby Gorin Memorial Championship gets underway Tuesday, July 24 at the Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Maryland. There are three age divisions – 13 and under, 14-15, and 16-18. Tuesday and Wednesday are the stroke play qualifying days (no cut). there are 6 slots in the 16-18 division, 16 in the 14-15, and 8 in the 13 under. The matches are then played, two a day (except for 13 under), on Thursday and Friday. All play will be over the North Course, site of U. S. Open Sectional Qualifying for 30 of the past 31 years, and site of the upcoming 2020 U. S. Women’s Amateur Championship.
“The Gorin” was founded in 1960 to honor the late Bobby Gorin, the first Woodmont youngster to win the DC Junior Championship. In the same year of 1959, Bobby qualified for the DC Amateur, a rare achievement for a junior. In the following winter, Bobby Gorin died in a car accident. Bobby’s uncle Lou established the Gorin Memorial at Woodmont Country Club in 1960. The beloved Lou Gorin died in early 2009. The event has continued as the longest running of the Washington Area match play junior events.
