Congressional CC Takes 2021 Senior Team Matches

A solid Congressional CC team outdueled the International CC senior squad today to take the final of the WMGA Senior Team Matches.  This was Congressional’s 5th championship since the matches began in 1960, their most recent win in 2017.

With a team comprised of established veterans and some players who recently turned 55, Congressional iced the win with a strong performance at home, winning 5 1/2 of six possible points with steady play over their tight and hilly Gold Course.  The first match off at Congressional was Richard Thomas & Kim Koons (International vs. Grayson Haines & Mark Giarraputo (Congressional). The Congressional duo was solid on the front and turned 4 up.  Thomas & Koons were able to stay even the rest of the way, gaining a tie on the back nine and 1/2 point to Haines & Giarraputo’s 2 1/2.  The second match was George Mavrikes & Bobby Morris (Congressional) vs. John Cockrill & Pete Nadanyi (International).  Mavrikes & Morris jumped out to a two hole lead, traded a couple of holes, and won the front two up.  They kept it up on the back, pulling away from the other team, winning the back, the 18 and all three points.

At International Paul Gural & Gary Reedy (International) lost the front nine 1 down.  The rest of the way was a seesaw battle with Skip Tendall & Clay Fitzgerald (Congressional) eventually taking the match 2 to 1.  The second match saw Mike Howell & Dave LeClere grab three points from Congressional’s Ben Brundred & Gary Hahn by a one hole margin on each nine.

Final result was Congressional 7 1/2 – International 4 1/2.  As in other close matches, a putt here and a good break there, the result could have easily flipped.  Play was solid by all involved, with temps starting in the low 50’s and not climbing out of the low 60’s.  The wind, which picked up as the day wore in, made both courses play a bit longer.  Both tracks were in excellent shape, playing firm and fast despite some showers on Saturday.  This event was cancelled last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and all the teams were excited to have it back on the schedule for this year.
